You have Claude, you have little time — and before every task, first the question of where it belongs: chat, Cowork or Design. That is over now. On 16 September 2026 Anthropic announced that Claude Cowork and the regular chat are growing into a single Claude. Two new tools come with it, Claude Docs and Claude Slides, and Claude Design now runs directly inside the conversation. All of it rolls out to Pro and Max plans over the coming weeks. The short answer up front: the real news is not Docs or Slides. It is that the decision goes away.
Until now you had to know where a task belonged before you started: quick question in chat, bigger work in Cowork, anything visual in Design. And what you had started in one of the three did not arrive in the other. Anthropic itself writes that this was exactly the feedback from users: the tools were not the problem, the question of which one to pick was. I will walk through the announcement the way I read it: what changes, what the three new layers are, what matters for you as a solo entrepreneur — and what you can safely skip.
What changes with Claude Cowork?
There is no mode anymore. You describe what you need, and Claude decides which tool the task requires. A quick question still gets a quick answer. A bigger task — research, a report, a spreadsheet, a presentation — Claude works through in steps: it searches the web, reads your files, runs code and assembles the result. You no longer have to break the work into steps beforehand, and you can have several tasks running at the same time.
The second change: bigger tasks keep running in the cloud even when you close your laptop. You come back, and the result is waiting in the conversation. From your phone you can check in between, answer follow-up questions or redirect the work. Only tasks that need files or programs on your computer still require the desktop app to be open.
And the third: everything you had in Cowork comes along — chats, projects, artifacts, connectors, skills and files. Your old Cowork tasks now sit in the regular conversation list and can be continued there. Claude Docs, Slides and Design: three layers in one conversation
Until now, what Claude created was a result at the end of a chat. Now these are working surfaces you keep working in. All three are in beta on the paid plans.
Claude Docs
You ask for a document, and the two of you write it together. It is not a finished text Claude drops into the chat, but a living document: you edit it yourself, leave Claude a comment at a specific spot, and others can write along once you share it. It stays private until you release it. To pass it on there is a link that also works on a phone, or you export it and open it in Word or Google Docs.
Claude Slides
You ask for a presentation, and Claude drafts the slides. You edit them directly, present straight from Claude, or download them as PowerPoint or PDF. Because report and slides come out of the same conversation, they match — that used to be the tedious part.
Claude Design
Design already existed as a standalone tool, and that stays the case. What is new is that it now works inside the conversation. You select an element and move it, or you tell Claude what should change. Everything that comes out of Docs, Slides or Design lives at a single link you can share and open from your phone.
An example, the way Anthropic describes it
A weekly report is due at noon. Before you head out, you ask Claude what moved last week and add: “Write it the way we always do, flag anything that slipped, and put the highlights in five slides.” If something is unclear, Claude asks. On the way, you watch from your phone. At your desk, the report is waiting as a document and the slides are ready. You fix a line yourself, leave Claude a comment on a slide and share both. And if you like, you schedule the report to start on its own every Monday.
Translated to a one-person business, that is not a weekly report to management. It is the proposal after the first call, created as a document and sent out by link. The presentation for the workshop that comes from your concept document and therefore carries the same statements. The monthly look at your numbers, set up once and then there on the first of every month.
How much Claude may decide on its own
There is a setting for it in the message box. The default is Manual: Claude asks before it acts, and you approve each action. Auto means Claude keeps working and only checks in when something needs a closer look; automated safety checks run first. The setting applies to the whole conversation, you can change it at any time, and you can stop or redirect Claude at any time. Anthropic's own advice, and mine too: for anything with consequences — sending messages, changing important files — stay close and look.
What matters for you as a solo entrepreneur
Not everything in the announcement matters equally for a one-person business. My order:
- The decision goes away. That is the biggest point, and it is unspectacular. Many never touched Cowork because they did not know when it was the right choice. Now there is no wrong way in.
- Docs for everything you hand to clients. Proposals, concepts, summaries: they come together in the conversation, you polish them yourself, they go out by link. No copying into Word and back.
- Slides for workshops and talks. The document turns into slides that match the document. Present straight from Claude or take them along as PowerPoint.
- Close the lid and let it keep working. The research runs while you are with a client. That used to be Cowork knowledge; now it is the default.
- Schedule recurring tasks. A routine that starts on its own every Monday or on the first of the month. How a routine becomes a reusable building block is in Claude Skills.
Less important for you: everything Anthropic writes for Enterprise admins, and the details of which setting now sits where in the menu. One of them you should know anyway: the “Global instructions” from Cowork are now called “Instructions for Claude” and live in the general settings. Anthropic explicitly asks you to check once whether the instructions are still what you want.
What else was announced this week
Projects become conversations (17 September). A project will no longer be a folder of instructions but one long-running conversation in which Claude splits the work itself, coordinates parallel threads and assembles the results. That starts as a beta in Claude Code for selected Pro and Max users; the rollout to chat and Cowork comes after. Your existing projects keep working unchanged. For you today: note it, do not act on it.
Claude for Small Business (15 September). The plugin now has 43 workflows and 27 new integrations, including Shopify, Stripe, Zoom, Xero and Zapier, and according to Anthropic has been installed more than 900,000 times. It runs in Cowork — so from now on in Claude — and is available on every paid plan. The catch for us: tools like Gusto, Square or QuickBooks are tailored to the US market, and the free workshops take place in ten US cities. The workflows themselves — weekly brief, answering inquiries, writing proposals — are exactly the ones that come up here too. Worth a look if you use Zapier, Notion or Google Workspace.
When do you get it — and how do you know?
The switch happens in stages, even within the same plan. You do not have to turn anything on. How to tell: as long as your message box still shows the “Chat” and “Cowork” options, you do not have it yet — keep working as before. Once your account has moved over, there is no way back to the separate versions. Team and Free plans follow “soon”, Enterprise customers get at least 30 days' notice.
A few things are still missing in the new version, and Anthropic says so itself: branching a conversation from an earlier point is not possible. Incognito chats open in the old experience, where Claude cannot create files. Search does not find older Cowork tasks, only the conversation list does. And new users no longer get the “Dispatch” feature.
On price: Anthropic names no surcharge. Docs, Slides and Design are included in the paid plans. But everything counts toward your usage limits, and long tasks that search, run code and create files use considerably more of it than a quick question. What you should do now
- Do not rebuild anything. Your chats, projects and skills come along. If you only used chat so far, nothing changes for you at first.
- Look at the message box once. “Chat” and “Cowork” options still there? Then wait. Gone? Then you are in.
- Hand over the first big thing. Anthropic's advice: take the next report or presentation you would otherwise have built yourself. For you: the next proposal as a document.
- Brief it the way you would brief a colleague. Anthropic names three things a good result needs: the desired outcome (“a one-page summary”), the format (“as a Word document”) and the material Claude should work from.
- Check your instructions. Open settings, read “Instructions for Claude”, clean up.

What happens to Claude Cowork?
Claude Cowork disappears as a separate mode and merges into Claude. Everything Cowork could do is then available from any conversation, and existing Cowork tasks, projects, connectors, skills and files are kept. The switch rolls out over the coming weeks, starting with Pro and Max plans.
What is Claude Docs?
Claude Docs is a living document you write together with Claude inside the conversation. You edit it yourself, leave Claude comments, share it by link or export it for Word or Google Docs. It is in beta and included in the paid plans.
Can I switch back between chat and Cowork?
No. Once your account has moved to the new Claude, the separate Chat and Cowork options no longer exist. As long as your message box still shows the two options, you do not have the new version yet.
When do I get the new Claude on the Pro or Max plan?
Anthropic has been rolling out the new version in stages since 16 September 2026, on web, desktop and mobile, over several weeks and without you having to turn anything on. Even accounts on the same plan get it at different times. Team and Free plans follow later.
The decision goes away. The question stays.
This update takes a decision off your plate that never got you anywhere: chat, Cowork or Design. What it does not take off your plate is the decision that carries everything — what you want to be visible for in the first place, and what you sell. A document that goes out by link only becomes a sales tool once it is clear what is in it.
