The short answer
NotebookLM costs nothing as long as you use it alone and at a normal scale. You need a free Google account, nothing else. The free tier is not a trial: no expiry date, no credit card.
And then comes the part most pricing pages skip past: You cannot buy NotebookLM’s paid tiers on their own. There is no button saying “NotebookLM Pro for X euros a month”. The higher tiers always arrive as part of something else — a Google AI subscription, a Google Workspace plan or a Cloud licence. Google says so itself. Anyone looking for the standalone price is looking for something that does not exist.
Here are all four tiers with prices, the real limits behind them, the net and gross conversion — and at the end the only calculation that actually matters for your business.

The prices in this table are consumer prices including VAT — that is how Google shows them. What you actually carry as a self-employed person is further down under net and gross.

NotebookLM Plus and Pro: what you get in each tier
The price alone says little. What matters are the limits — and they differ sharply:

The free tier also includes three Video Overviews and ten reports per day, plus ten Deep Research runs a month. For a solo business, 100 notebooks holding 50 sources each is a remarkable amount of room. I have been working with it intensively for months and do not come anywhere near the notebook limit.
Where you hit a wall first is somewhere else: the 50 questions a day. That sounds like plenty, until you spend an afternoon going through an offer with your notebook. Then fifty questions are gone faster than you think — and the counter only resets the next day.
What does the upgrade cost?
From Standard to Plus it is €4.99 a month, from Standard to Pro €21.99. There is no upgrade for NotebookLM alone — you always book the whole Google AI subscription and get the higher NotebookLM tier with it. Which also means: if you already have the subscription for Gemini, your NotebookLM tier is unlocked already, without you doing anything.
Is NotebookLM really free?
Yes, and without the asterisk you would expect. No trial period, no credit card, no payment details. You sign in with a Google account and start. That is rare enough among AI tools to be worth saying out loud.
The three asterisks sit elsewhere:
1. The daily limits are real. 50 questions and 3 Audio Overviews a day are enough for normal work. They are not enough for a day where you work through an entire project.
2. Data protection is the actual limit. This is the point where I most often push back in consulting when someone says “but it’s free”. In the private free version you have no data processing agreement, no choice of server location, no advanced admin settings. For a podcast draft from public sources that does not matter. For your clients’ documents it does.
3. What you put in is the one decision you have to make. Whatever the tier: no health data, no personnel files, no client session notes. That is not a Google problem, it applies to every cloud tool — but NotebookLM makes uploading files so convenient that it happens easily.

Net and gross: what it really costs you as a self-employed person
Google shows the AI subscriptions as consumer prices, meaning they include 19% German VAT. If you can reclaim input tax, that is not your number. This is:

The difference between Plus and Pro is €14.29 a month net, or €171 a year. That is the number your decision rests on — not the €21.99 on the Google page. The same calculation for Claude is in What Claude costs.
One note on invoicing: check that your subscription runs on your business address and your VAT identification number. A private subscription on your private address will not go through your bookkeeping cleanly.
The route I usually recommend to the self-employed: Workspace
There is a second route to the higher tiers, and for a business it is often the better one: Google Workspace from Business Standard upwards includes NotebookLM Plus at no extra cost. The entry plan, Business Starter, does not include it — it starts one tier above.
Business Standard costs around €13.60 per user per month when billed annually; paying monthly runs about 20% higher. Workspace prices are net prices — VAT is added on top here, unlike the AI subscriptions. You can see the current state in Google’s Workspace pricing overview.
Counted purely on NotebookLM, that is more expensive than the €4.99 for Google AI Plus. The reason to do it anyway is a different one:
- A data processing agreement with Google — the basis on which you are allowed to process business documents at all
- Advanced data protection settings and a choice of server location
- Your content is not used for training
- You get mail, calendar, Drive and Meet under your own domain as well
My rule of thumb for years: test for free, work in Workspace. If you need a business address under your own domain anyway — and you do — then what you pay for with Workspace is not NotebookLM, it is your office. NotebookLM Plus is the bonus.
Which tier fits you?
Stay free if: You use NotebookLM a few times a week for your own research, work with public sources and upload no client data. That covers most of the self-employed people I work with — and most of them notice no limit for months.
Take Google AI Plus at €4.99 if: You regularly hit the 50 questions a day or need more than three Audio Overviews. Hitting the limit four times means the €4.19 net is already earned. It is the cheapest honest answer to a real annoyance.
Take Google AI Pro at €21.99 if: You have the subscription for the Gemini models anyway. For NotebookLM alone, the jump from Plus to Pro only pays off if you genuinely build notebooks with more than 100 sources — and few one-person businesses do.
Take Workspace from Business Standard if: You process business documents in NotebookLM. At that point it is no longer a pricing question but a legal one.
You do not need Ultra. I put that plainly because the tier looks good in comparison tables. Around €84 net a month is almost never justifiable through NotebookLM for a one-woman business.
NotebookLM alternatives: what else there is — and what it does not replace
If the limits get too tight or the data protection does not fit, these are the serious alternatives:

Staying honest here means: none of these alternatives replaces NotebookLM one to one. What makes NotebookLM special is the combination of a closed set of sources — it answers exclusively from what you uploaded — and the Audio Overviews. Nobody else has that combination.

What rarely shows up in this calculation
The price of a tool is never just the subscription. Three items that belong in it:
Your own learning curve. Two to three hours until NotebookLM sits. That is little, but it is not nothing — and it is the item most tools actually fail on.
The tidying-up effort. Notebooks with outdated sources deliver outdated answers without warning you. Going through them once a quarter is part of the deal.
The subscription you keep even though you do not use it. The biggest hidden cost among the self-employed is not one tool that is too expensive, it is seven tools of which four run on unused. If you have not been in a notebook for three months, cancel the tier and carry on for free.
Do not calculate the monthly price, calculate what the tool replaces for you. If a notebook cuts your preparation for a first call from 25 minutes to five, and you do that twenty times a year, that is over six hours saved. From there on, the question of €4.99 stops being interesting.
Isn’t it called Gemini Notebook now?
It is. Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook in July 2026. Same product, same notebooks, same prices — only the name over the door is new. But since almost everyone still searches for “NotebookLM”, the old name stands here too. What changed in detail is in NotebookLM is now called Gemini Notebook.
